Getting the most out of your skills development spend!
Skills development is a priority element of the B-BBEE scorecard that requires a measured entity to spend on the upskilling of its staff/external people. Due to its nature, a measured entity needs to spend in order to earn points with regards to the skills development element and, as a priority element, the measured entity needs to meet 40% of the points available in order not be discounted one level. The 2013 Amended Codes of Good Practice introduced limitations of some of the spends on the codes with respect to Category F and Category G skills spend as well as any legitimate costs (indirect spend). Category F & G refer to informal and workplace learning programmes under the learning programmes matrix and is capped at 25% for COGP and 15% for ICT of the total skills development cost. Legitimate training (indirect spend) costs refer to costs such as accommodation, catering and travelling (non-exhaustive) costs which cannot exceed more than 15% of the total skills development spend. For big companies to spend 6% of the leviable amount is next to impossible, especially in the current harsh economic circumstances due to COVID however, EconoBEE has found a solution to this problem.
